Minimalism, A New 'Talk Of The Town'

Nowadays, design blogs and graphic magazines are inundated with a special buzz-word ‘minimalism’. Bloggers and designers of both graphic and web origin have already written a hundred articles about minimalism and the importance of minimal design. I myself have amused many readers with my blog post Minimal is the New Sexy just a few months ago. Minimalism is such a strange design style that when even a simplest man looks at it, he cannot help himself but to praise its beauty and cleverness. However, I have always been of the view that it is certainly not due to all the special ‘talk’ about minimalism that amuses its onlooker. Then why do we find minimalism so creative?

Of all the people who might be thinking on these lines, I have tried to jot down some points that I mustered up through my observation and experience. So whenever your mind (or someone else’s tongue) asks you about minimalism, just reply keeping the following points in mind.

Simpler Simply Looks Better

Although it is quite a cliché that less is more or simpler is better, but to be honest, in case of minimal design, this rubber-stamp expression is the best explanation for its creativity. A design reaches its epic of creativity when it looks great and is successful in communicating the desired message. Taking that in consideration, a message is best communicated when it is simple and so if we join the dots, we will get the following picture giving perfect explanation of why a minimal design looks creative.

Stimulates Curiosity

I consider that any message, visual, textual or audible, is creative if it succeeds in bringing out the curiosity in the audience or reader. On the other hand, minimalism is perhaps the best design style to tell one half of the story to the audience and leave the other half to their curiosity. That is why, for instance, when we look at a minimal ad giving an indirect and subtle message and leaving us thinking about the real message, we cannot help ourselves but to admire its creativity.

More Challenging

Anyone can develop a design by adding lots of elements, graphics, details and explanation to it. However, creating a design by using as less as possible elements, yet making it effective in communicating the required message, is certainly not everyone’s cup of tea. Minimalism is way more challenging than developing a regular design and that makes it more creative than a regular design.

Keeps Focused

An aspect of creativity is that it does not let its on-lookers quibble around with divided attention. A creative design rather keeps you focused on itself offering lesser or no distraction. As a minimal design uses lesser elements to convey message and keeps the viewer focused onto one or two specific elements, therefore, this may prove to be yet another reason why people find minimal design to be creative.

Surfaces Originality

As I have mentioned earlier that minimalism is a challenge not everyone can fulfill. An artist or designer who starts to develop a minimal design cannot just take a pencil and start drawing. During the creative process of creating a minimal design, you tend to dig out the most creative ideas through a continuous and repeated process of idea generation and filtration. So, after many attempts what comes on surface is purest creativity the form of minimalism.

To Conclude…

Minimalism is indeed new talk of the town. Every other artist or designer tells us that minimalism is pure creativity. The audience itself confesses the absolutely creative nature of a minimal design. However, why is minimalism considered creative and why is a minimal design vouches for creativity is something I have tried to answer in this post. I hope it makes you think in new dimensions
